Here’s this week’s preview:
Yes, August and although I’m still stranded at home at a time when we should all be thinking about being somewhere else, imaginary travels exist and Around the World can be your imaginary travel agent. It is also a time for lazing around if at all possible, and that’s what I plan to do with a single edition of the newsletter each week, fewer words but with more music included. And the show will be the same – maximum music and minimum me.
The running order will as usual be on my blog as will the listen again facility. You can see the running order for last week here. And listen to the show too.
Album of the Week: Although the album was released in 1998, the music comes from the previous decades. Amália Rodrigues inspired singers, predominantly women but often men, to carry and enhance the Portuguese fado tradition. She had a profound effect on Portuguese culture and when she died in October 1999 there were three days of official mourning and the partial suspension of campaigning for the weekend’s general election. Amália Rodrigues was arguably the country’s leading public figure of the 20th century.
You can read her obituary in the Guardian here and find out more about the Amália Rodrigues Foundation here.
Here’s the album on Spotify
I’ll be playing four tracks – all, I think from the 1950s.
Here are some other videos of music I’ll be playing – either the song itself or the artist.
