Around the World shortlisted for radio award

The 2021 Community Radio Awards shortlist was announced this morning.

Around the World the weekly radio show I have been presenting for almost three years, has been shortlisted in the Specialist Music Show of the Year. The final results to be announced at the awards ceremony on the 23rd of October in Coventry.

A shortlist of 5 programmes was whittled down from entries from stations from every part of the UK.

The weekly global mix ignores boundaries – musical and geographical. Listening, you are as likely to hear traditional Scottish music as Russian electronic or Mongolian rock.

It all began as a personal project several years ago when I was compiling playlists for myself as I “travelled” around the Mediterranean on Google Maps using the web to research the music. This eventually led to Slice Audio letting me experiment with music radio to play records you don’t often or ever hear on the radio. Ferry FM carried the show from Spring 2020.

Later the show was picked up by the SERC network of community stations Lisburn’s 98FM, Bangor FM and FM105: Down Community Radio. More recently Radio Larne has carried the show. In all, 6 local radio stations.

The winners of all the awards will be revealed in a ceremony at the Coventry Transport Museum, in partnership with Coventry UK City of Culture in October. Full list of shortlists here.
