But first, what is the instrument in the photo below?

Kateřina Göttlichová is the musician, but I can’t find out what the instrument is called – and no it’s not a competition. If you know, please tell me.

Kateřina Singer is a composer and multi-instrumentalist and Zimnica (Chills in Czech and Winter in several Slav languages such as Slovenian, Bosnian and Croatian) is her first solo album.

This is what Kultura21.cz has to say about her and her first album. “One of the founders of the award-winning BraAgas-awarded Anděl opens a new life and music stage with the single Družička from the upcoming album called Zimnice. The album will be released on November 26 by the Czech publishing house Indies Scope.

“[Družička] The bridesmaid combines a combination of traditional music and modern electronics with the text of a Slavic folk song. The artist contrasts the old story with today’s society. The use of acoustics of instruments such as nyckel harps in the creation of percussion and ambient surfaces also preserves folklore authenticity …”

Kateřina Göttlichová , together with the predominantly female band BraAgas, which performs folk music from Spain to the Balkans, is the holder of several Anděl awards in the world music genre category. Their latest album O ptácích a rybách appeared on June 2018 at the top of the World Music Charts Europe.”

No one is more surprised than me that I’ve become something of a fan of C. Tangana in recent months. It’s not just the music. It’s the high standards of the videos, the humour and the ability to combine something traditional with new interpretations that make it so interesting and entertaining. I’ll be starting the show with his new single (and video) La Culpa (The Blame). In the line up are Omar Montes – like Tangana from Madrid, Daviles de Novelda from Alecante, and featuring Spanish flamenco singer Canelita from Algeciras on the shored of the Medetarian just opposite Gibraltar on the Bay of Gibraltar.

Here’s the official video of La Culpa:

One of the best performances I saw last year was from Italian Antonio Castrignanò. It was a powerful performance with an enthusiastic audience who would have been dancing in the isles – but there was plenty of room in front of the stage. Taranta World is from his first album in several years Babilonia. “Antonio Castrignanò is a tambourine player [and he’s a pretty good guitar player, too] and singer rooted in Salento’s musical culture, combining raw energy and pure emotion while moving from gentle chanting to the explosive rhythm of the Pizzica Tarantata” And there’s more here

This is the video of Taranta World:

Last week I played Vanished Into Air by Sacred Heart of Bontempi. Paul Burgess a friend for around 40 years and former creative force behind one of the best punk bands from anywhere Ruefrex, contacted me on Twitter and asked me to play it. And I did. It’s only since then I discovered the significance of the song and overall project.

“’Vanished Into Air; …a song for the disappeared’ is the 2nd single from Sacred Heart of Bontempi. The band are TP Burgess; Davy McLarnon; Keith McVeigh; Donal McCann and Ali Mackenzie. Video by Alastair & Angus Graham, Ringfield Productions. Wave Victims Group support this music initiative and continue to appeal for information leading to the discovery of the remaining ‘disappeared’. Details at the end of the video.”

If you don’t know about The Disappeared, one of the most horrific parts of our history here – and for some it is not yet history – then this video is a good place to start.
