This week’s featured album
Errante by Adriana Calcanhotto
Adriana Calcanhotto – Larga Tudo
The featured album this week is from Brazil’s Adriana Calcanhotto. Errante is her first since Só in 2020 which was finished before, and released during the pandemic. Like many other musicians around the world, Covid 19 put a total halt to recording, studio rehearsals and live performances. But it was also a moment to reflect and reorganise. Calcanhotto spent lockdown demo-ing her new work and her producer distributed songs to studio musicians who were ready to go into recording as the pandemic was receding.
Adriana Calcanhotto began her professional career in 1984 and released her first studio album in 1990. She was born in 1965 in Porto Alegre, Brazil. In an interview in Sounds and Colours web magazine, the two-time Latin Grammy winner talked about the music in her family. “My parents were very connected to music because my father was a musician and my mother had been a dancer.” She told reporter Oleno Netto. “During my childhood, she choreographed. So, she listened to music to dance, to create choreography. And the people who worked in the house – the maid, the nanny – listened to popular radio. I heard very sophisticated jazz, classical music, a lot of instrumental music – but basically jazz and classical music – with my parents, and popular radio with the people in the house.”
She started performing professionally in 1984 and released her first studio album in 1990. Her music is considered MPB, “música popular brasileira” (Brazilian popular music), but she combines elements of various genres such as bossa nova, early yé-yé, folk and softer side of rock.
In 2015, Calcanhotto joined Universidade de Coimbra in Portugal as a university ambassador, acting as visiting lecturer on song composition courses and as an artist-in-residence.
Errante is Calcanhotto’s tenth studio album – she has released another three as Adriana Partimpim, an alter ego who sings for children [of all ages]. She’s also put out five live albums since her recording career started in 1990.
Daoirí Farrell Plays “Clasped to the Pig” at Folk Alliance International
There’ll be another track from Daoirí Farrell’s album. He’s been playing this song for a few years. This from 5 years ago. His website tells us “It’s commonly accepted that Dublin-born singer and bouzouki player Daoirí Farrell is one of most important singers to come out of Ireland in recent years. A product of Dublin’s famous club An Góilin Traditional Singers, since launching his own solo live career at the 2016 Celtic Connections, Daoirí Farrell has gone from strength to strength … he can boast numerous honours from BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards to ALSR Celtic Music accolades.
Gaïsha – Ana Aïcha
Ana Aïcha is the title of Gaisha ‘s album. If you have listened to the show often enough, you’ll have heard several of the songs which have been available singly until now. The album has a lovely combination of twangy guitar, Arabic influenced vocals, and pop sensibility.
And there’s more.
Tune in to find out. The running order will be on my website from Sunday. And if you want to hear more … (but don’t tell anyone else).
Until the next time – look up.
