New station brings Around the World to Singapore

The newest station to join the Around the World network in 973FM in Singapore. Radio 973FM is a web-based internet radio station based in Singapore city. It plays Top 40-Pop, Rock, Easy Listening and has expanded the offer to its listeners by adding Around the World to its Sunday night schedule. This week’s Featured Album – Levantar do Chão by Retimbrar

Retimbrar is a Portuguese band based in the beautiful but very hilly city, Porto. They are a 8 piece orchestra playing a music they call TugaBeat, “Portuguese beats and songs made new”. By focusing on Portuguese drums and rhythms they aim to capture the sounds and atmosphere of Portuguese folklore and its chanting traditions.

This album – their second – was first released in 2022, but it is getting a new push which had it arriving on my desk last month and appearing on the World Music Chart Europe straight in at number 3 (Levantar do chao Retimbrar, Revoluçao d’Alegria, Portugal).

On stage and in the studio they have been experimenting with folk, rock and electronics an developing music with other bands and individual musicians.

It is difficult to merely take in a performance by the Rwandan group known as The Good Ones. The pathos of the band and the country’s recent history permeates the duo’s existence and its music. Adrian Kazigira and Janvier Havugimana were taught music by the latter’s older brother, who then perished during the country’s brutal genocide. They formed a band as a way to process their nation’s trauma and also bring together Rwanda’s three tribes: Tutsi, Hutu, and Abatwa.

From the start, the simple guitar fingerpicking style and very sparse rhythm guide the plaintive vocals into a trance-like meditation. The music is a fascinating mix of guitar strumming that combines the kind of cyclical song form you hear on the West African kora and vocal harmonizing common to many African musical traditions.

The group’s origin story may be tragic, but The Good Ones’ determination to spread its musical message is an inspiration.

SET LIST “The Farmer”, “Mon Cheri”, “Seraphinne, You are the Prettiest Woman in the World”, and “Young People Are the Future”

MUSICIANS Adrien Kazigira: acoustic guitar, vocals
Janvier Havugimana: percussion, guitar, vocals
Marilena Umuhoza Delli: translator, spokesperson

Genticorum – Le Persuadeur

In recent shows I have been playing music from the Qubec band Genticorum. For over twenty years, they have been playing on traditional, folk and Celtic music stages including Celtic Connections in Scotland, the Tønder Folk Festival in Denmark, the National Folk Festival in Australia, the Independent Music Festival in Alexandria, Egypt, the Rain Forest Festival in Malaysia, as well as countless venues across North America.

They have been nominated for and received many Canadian Folk Music Awards, as well as Juno and ADISQ nominations, “Genticorum have earned a reputation as a leading voice in the evolution of Québécois traditional music”.

Pascal Gemme (fiddle) and Yann Falquet (guitar), the group’s two founding members. Since 2015, they have been joined by multi-instrumentalist and composer Nicholas Williams (flute, accordion).

Genticorum fuses modern composition and elements from classic folk and Celtic music. Their musical scores are original, largely based on Gemme’s repertoire of fiddle tunes, while their lyrics are often traditional.

More music events in 2024

Two weeks ago I included a list of music festivals and conferences planned for 2024. Here’s another and I’ll be at this one.

Budapest Ritmo (11 – 13 April) “brings roots and rhythms, multiple genres, fusion styles, and unexpected cultural mixes to the heart of Budapest.” Global lineup meets local talent, with Ritmo’s range growing each year: a showcase stage, a conference, networking events, screenings and afterparties all geared to inspire and connect.”

The weekend kicks off with a showcase day 11 April. The showcases are about discovery and rising talent. Six selected bands will each play for 40-minutes. In the audience will be invited professionals and the crowd – the event is open to all. Hungarian and regional artists will play at Szimpla Kert.

In August the gantastic Mokoomba will play The Jazz Cafe, London. But the tickets are already on sale.
